I think that the PowerPoint #2 assignment was harder than the first powerpoint assignment. But at the same time, I think that 15 slides was way to long for such a simple task. I think that making it 15 slides long was actually the task at nad rather than the information that we learned. However, i did learn some new things that I'm sure I will incorporate in my future powerpoint presentations.

Most likely, I will incorporate non-computer audio-visual technologies in my classroom by overhead projectors. I think that even though an overhead projector is somewhat an older form of technology, it still accomplishes the task of giving alot of information at one time, but also allowing the students to ask questions if they need extra explaining. Using an overhead projector with computer based technology would be easy because the information that I would put on the projector would most likely come from some personal notes that I have on my computer.

I didn't really learn anything new this past week, but I did learn how to enhance the skills that I already knew which is always good.

I feel like the biggest advantage of using presentation software in a K-12 classroom setting is that the instructor has a clear view of want they're going to teach for that day and they have a plan. Once you've started a presentation, it's very hard to stray away from the lesson which is guaranteeing that you guys get through all the information that you're supposed. However, a disadvantage would be that a presentation doesn't leave much room for discussions or questions. So it kind of silences any possible questions that may need answering. Another disadvantage is that students may get caught up in jotting down notes instead of actually listening to what the professor is saying throughout the lecture and possibly missing alot of information.

I think that a teacher teaching any subject will benefit from teaching a power point lesson. It's straight to the point and it leaves a little room for a deeper explanation if needed. Like I mentioned before, it's a surefire way to make sure that you discuss everything that you plan to talk about for the day. I remember when I was in my social studies class, my teacher was great at using power points for his daily lessons. We as a clas understood evreything and it was really easy to follow him and ask questions if we needed to. In powerpoints you can add pictures or even hyperlinks to anything that you want to. For example, if I wanted to show my students a clip of last nights' news explaining something that we were discussing along with a chapter lesson, it's very easy to do! http://www.cnn.com/

In this article, it discusses the importance of using technology in the classrooms. But then, it discusses how some school leaders may feel uncomfortable with an influx of technology in the schools. I can see that because adding technology means more responsibilty and lots of money that most schools don't have and can't afford. Research indicates that while there are poor uses of technology in education, appropriate technology use can be very beneficial in increasing educational productivity (Byrom & Bingham, 2001; Clements & Sarama, 2003; Mann, Shakeshaft, Becker, & Kottkamp, 1999; Valdez, McNabb, Foertsch, Anderson, Hawkes, & Raack, 2000; Wenglinsky, 1998). I think that if research proves that technology is beneficial to the learning enviroment, then the people should support anything that's beneficial for the future leaders of the world.

I am all for Web 2.0 technologies when it comes to K-12 education. First off, if the student is planning on coming to college, then most of them will need to know how to use such tools. However, I know alot of schools that don't use most of these technologies and their graduates go off to college and know nothing about computers...a perfect example of that would be me! I knew about excel, but I didn't know how to use it...I never heard of Inspiration...alot of things that I learned how to do in this class, I had never heard or seen before. I would definitely use them because I wouldn't want to possibly handicap my students by not preparing them for something that they may encounter in the future. That's the opposite of what a teacher is supposed to do. A great example of the Web 2.0 technologies would be a blog site or even twitter. I think that a blog site would be the equivalent to a daily journal.

Wikipedia is EVIL! It carries incorrect information and some of their information are opinions of other people. I think that wkikpedia should be banned. If you can't carry correct information, then why are you considered a resource??

I think that making my Wiki was great. But i don't know if i'll use this particular resource in my classroom. I think that it will be very distracting and the kids will be more interested in making their wikispace pretty and not really paying attention to the actual task at hand.

I think that since the birth of the internet, the way we study and learn has gone to a different level than ever before. It's so easy to go to google.com and just type anything in the search engine and find an answer. I think that the internet is a fantastic resource and i'm glad that I didn't have to be a student in the 60s when there was no such thing as a search engine. However, it can be misleading at times. It's hard to know when information is honest and when it's false; of this is someone's opinion or the real facts...that's why I think it's useful when you're trying to do a quick search of something. But for a research paper, I think you have to go deeper than just the internet and you actually have to pick up a book and read.

I think that other ways you may use the web for student learning are the help sites. There are a lot of help sites for any subject you can think of. When I was doing research for my final project, I stumbled upon so many different help sites. There were English help sites, math help sites...anything you could think of. They even had science fair ideas that were already thought out for you. When I did my science fair project, I had to come up with the idea on my own! Not anymore...

I think that if I teach Creative Writing, then most likely it will be for high school students. The problem that I would have for supervising their work is plagiarism. Plagiarism is a really big deal since the internet came out. Students can just copy and paste or even download a whole paper right off the internet and not put in any work. I think sites such as turnitin.com has helped alot when it comes to this, but that still would be a big problem.

As either a Creative Writing teacher , I would use concept maps and storyboards for my class. I think each of these tools gives the writer a clear consensus of what they want to discuss on a paper. It makes one idea turn into papragraphs of insight. I think the tools that I could use to accomplish this goal would be either a projector on which I could make an example for the kids to follow, or an online step-by-step guide located on my website to help my kids understand what's importand and what's not important in a paper.

I would stress for my kids to use an outline map because it is the best thing you can do to organize your ideas before writing any type of paper. In any type of class that involves writing something, I think that you should always use tools such as idea maps and storyboarding skills. You don't want to prepeare a sloppy paper where your ideas are all over the place and I think that these types of helpful little "plans" will help when it comes to keeping your ideas and thoughts in order.

Within the last week, I know we learned to work with the Inspiration program. I never knew such a program existed and I think it's great when it comes to storyboarding or outlining anything. I especially loved the assignment where you had to make a family tree...I think I may actally do that for my mom and grandma as gifts. I think this tools will especially come in handy if I continue on the path to be a creative writing teacher.

Blog #10

Some topics that I found most interesting in my classmates blog was about how she planned on using a Power Point to teach her kids the 50 states and their capitols. I thought that that was an interesting idea. I honestly don't know all of the capitols of the 50 states and that's because none of my teachers ever stresses learning the capitols. I think that if she does do it, though, she make a little song to go along with it. That would be fun.

A technology related skill that I would like to learn next is how to use Excel for my personal expenses. I know that it can be done, but I don't how to do it. I have a friend whose Dad uses excel to keep the family expenditures and I think that that's so cool. It'll take some time to do. I think that i'm going to start after I graduate...when I start to have bills. *YIKES*

I think my educational technology-related goals are very reachable. I don't require much. A projector, a computer and Microsoft Office programs are all I really need. I think that since I plan on teaching Elementary students, I don't need too much technology because they have short attention spans and computers can be very distracting. They are in a college setting, so I know they must be extremely distracting in elementary school.

A web based tool that I may use in my classroom is a web-site called CyberBee. It's focused on elementary school kids in like the 3rd and 4th grade. It has numerous links such as art, health and nutrition and even physical education. I would use this tool in class as either a substitute for a lesson or like a fun day in the schools' computer lab.
More specifically, though, I plan on teaching either Social Studies or English. Under the Language Arts link, they have more links that you can click on such as BookRead. The Bookread project is designed to allow teachers to and students to discuss the books they are reading with a partner classroom. So not only will I be teaching and entertaining my class, but a fellow class of the same grade.

Since I plan on teaching primary [or maybe even secondary (I'm really not sure)] English or Social Studies, I don't think that I'll use the Excel program. Maybe, if I was teaching math, but not so much for English or Social Studies. However, I think that I will use the Power Point program frequently! If I'm teaching secondary education, I'll use powerpoint for my lectures. If I'm teaching primary education, I'd use power point to illustrate a class book and to encourage class involvement.

My plans for my final project is to focus on Primary Education in the English/Writing/Language Arts department. I'm going to try to see if I could use technology to make reading and writing more fun and interesting for 3rd and 4th graders. I think that there's some software that I could buy to encourage a more vivd imagination and, in essence, encourage the kids to have a more vibrant imagination when they're writing and reading books and novels.

Week #1

So I missed class last week because my fiance' and I were in the emergency room from 12 am to about 5:30 in the morning. However, we were in the emergency room for him and not for me so it counts as an unexcused absence for me :(

But I WILL not miss ANOTHER day of class, another assignment, or another skill check...
